We frequently use one word to describe our expanding universe: space. However, what is space and, more importantly, where does it start?
Space is a nearly perfect vacuum with very little pressure and almost no matter. Because the molecules are not close enough to one another for sound to travel between them, sound cannot travel through space. While more populated regions of the universe can support planets, stars, and galaxies, “emptier” areas of the universe are not quite empty; instead, bits of gas, dust, and other matter float around them.
From Earth, the conventional view of outer space is that it starts at the Kármán line, which is located approximately 62 miles (100 km) above sea level. This is an arbitrary boundary at a height where there is not much air to breathe or light to disperse. The sky turns black above this altitude because there are not enough oxygen molecules in the atmosphere to keep it blue.
