Dead Space game wallpaper: a terrifyingly awful sci-fi classic is back!
Dead Space was EA’s sci-fi parody of Resident Evil 4, which came out in 2008. By replacing virus-infected villagers with mutant alien necromorphs, it took the groundbreaking design concepts of Shinji Mikami’s horror masterpiece—such as the over-the-shoulder perspective, tense crowd-control combat, and zombies that were not actually zombies—and threw them into a remote corner of the universe. Though they were unable to completely escape the light of Resi 4’s incandescent star, the results were darkly thrilling.
After fifteen years, Dead Space is easier to enjoy on its own merits because it is so far removed from Mikami’s game. Motive, an EA studio, gave the game a surprisingly restrained makeover, avoiding the temptation to add contemporary embellishments. Rather, it simplifies the experience by changing the USG Ishimura’s layout to allow players to navigate through it and all of its horrors more easily. It is a reimagining that benefits greatly from the original’s strong forward momentum and tense pacing.
While meticulously maintaining the industrial aesthetic and oppressive atmosphere of the original, Motive has been able to add more detail to the struggling mining ship thanks to EA’s Frostbite technology. With each blast, space engineer Isaac Clarke’s weaponized engineering tools remove chunks of flesh from necromorphs, making the gory tactic of killing enemies by chopping off their limbs even more graphic. Isaac now speaks, and while his remarks are not particularly significant, his practical observations make more sense than his obstinate silence. Isaac’s ability to float freely during the game’s zero-gravity sections is a more significant design change that makes his fleeting excursions outside the Ishimura stand out.
A few side-missions are added in a rewritten script to give characters like the insane Dr. Mercer and Isaac’s evasive girlfriend Nicole more depth. While the gut-wrenching end reveal still has the same overall impact, the climactic plot twist has also been altered. This game was never meant to be an introspective character piece, so none of these narrative changes significantly improve things, but they also do not make it worse.
Dead Space continues to be an exhilarating sci-fi rollercoaster: the game snares your adrenal glands and wrings them dry from the first time the first necromorph erupts from a ceiling vent and chases you into the Ishimura’s intestines. It continuously forces you to engage in increasingly difficult combat, requiring you to precisely dismember these twitching monsters. In order to intensify combat, it also excels at keeping you alert by frequently depriving you of sound, gravity, and oxygen—sometimes all three.
Additionally, the Ishimura has a lot of character, whereas its human protagonist is only sketched. The goals are neatly themed around Isaac’s role as an engineer and include thrilling sci-fi situations, like repairing the ship’s anti-asteroid defenses while giant space rocks threaten to crush you or removing a giant necromorph that is blocking the communications array. Each chapter focuses on a different function of the ship. Dead Space gets right to the point, in contrast to contemporary blockbusters that are frequently burdened by bloated worlds or predatory business models.
